History of Fort Collins
In 1864, the city was founded as a military outpost of the United States Army. During the Indian wars of the mid-1860s, an encampment, i.e., Camp Collins was established near the banks of Cache La Poudre River. It was established in the light of protecting the Overland mail route. The camp was named after Colonel W. O. Collins who was famed as a commander at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. In 1864, the area nearby the fort became a major center of shipping, trading, and manufacturing. In 1869, Fort Collins was incorporated. During the 1880s, the city witnessed the construction of myriads of homes and commercial buildings. the Great Western sugar processing plant was established in Fort Collins in 1903.
