History of Fort Collins

In 1864, the city was founded as a military outpost of the United States Army. During the Indian wars of the mid-1860s, an encampment, i.e., Camp Collins was established near the banks of Cache La Poudre River. It was established in the light of protecting the Overland mail route. The camp was named after Colonel W. O. Collins who was famed as a commander at Fort Laramie, Wyoming.  In 1864, the area nearby the fort became a major center of shipping, trading,  and manufacturing. In 1869, Fort Collins was incorporated. During the 1880s, the city witnessed the construction of myriads of homes and commercial buildings. the Great Western sugar processing plant was established in Fort Collins in 1903. During the twentieth century, the city was being called a 'conservative city' due to the prohibition of alcoholic beverages. In 1974, the Fort Collins Historical Society was established to encourage the community to preserve the historic buildings and documents. The society also helped generate educational opportunities so that people can get acquainted with the city's past. Avery House

All wide roads in Fort Collins remind people of one man, and that is, Franklin Avery. He was the man behind plenitude of developments and establishments in the city. The credit of the foundation of First National Bank goes to Franklin Avery. He was the man behind the development of northern Colorado and he achieved it through the extensive use of agriculture. He, together with his wife Sara, laid the foundation of their home at the corner of Mountain Avenue and Meldrum Street in 1879. Originally, this two-storied house was marked with the entry area, a basement, three bedroom upstairs, two rooms on first floor, and a dining room. This house was belonged to Avery family until 1962.
